1. How did you get your start? What were some key steps that got you from bedroom DJing to the European circuit?
I used to only make music and didn’t really think about starting to dj. I was a bit shy to send out my tracks to dj’s as well in the beginning. First time I ever sent a promo mail was to Helena Lauwaert because we were going to see her at Paradise City Festival. My friends and I thought it would be really cool if she could play one of my tracks when we were there in the crowd. I got good feedback from her and she told me she was going to play it. Not only did Helena play my track (‘Know You Better’) but she later also posted it on her instagram in her post about Paradise City. After that the track got some attention from big artists like for example Malugi. I think that is where it all started for me :)
2. What motivated you to start 32Jumpstreet, which is about spotlighting Belgian artists and supporting local scenes?
When I was growing up as an artist I felt like there was something missing in the scene. Either you just started and you would release your music yourself or the bigger artists and stronger producers would sign on huge labels. I found that in Belgium there was a spot missing right in between. So that is exactly why I started 32 Jumpstreet.
3. Hard house is very much en vogue right now- however, you try and add your own spin, what do you think is the musical fingerprint that your sets and productions have that no one else has?
I really try my best to mix hard house with bassline and UKG. I think the three compliment each other very well. You can really build a unique set with those genres but still keep the energy high. I think you can see the same thing happening in my productions, a mix of hard house, UKG and bassline.
4. You grew up in Gent. How much musical inspiration had your homeland given you? I also hear plenty of UKG influences in your sound, right?
I am so grateful to have grown up in Gent. I don’t think I could live in a city with a better nightlife. Almost every day there is stuff to do, big and small. I party a lot myself so almost every week I got to take inspiration from producers and dj’s that I look up to.
5. Tell us about your mix, the aim you had with it, and what you wanted it to say.
I used to play a lot more hard house in the past but lately I have been leaning more towards UKG and bassline. So with this set I really wanted to push this a bit. You won’t find a lot of hardhouse in this mix but rather some hard hitting, high energy bassline and UKG. I also added 5 or 6 IDs from my own, because I’ve been writing a lot of music and this inspired me even more to get the most out of my studio time.
6. What gear did you use? Is that important to you in any way? Whether in the booth or studio?
I’m not a picky guy, I usually play on whatever the club has to offer. If I can mix tracks on it, I’ll use it. But if I had to choose a mixer I would definitely go for the V10. It just has everything you couldever need in a mixer. For production I mainly use my laptop and my keyboards. I am currently saving up for some more analog gear because once you start using those instruments you don’t want to go back.
7. What are you working on for the rest of the year?
This year I really want to push my label 32Jumpstreet even more. I am working on organizing events and on finding new upcoming artists in Belgium that I think should get more recognition. Music wise I am working on expanding my unreleased music list together with some big names in the industry. I can’t wait to play out and share my new music with everyone! :)
