Terminal V Podcast 094 || CADZOW

Cadzow is part of the new wave of Scottish artists who are setting the hard techno agenda. The Glaswegian works through his tunes at pace, keeping dancers locked with selections that dip into several sub-genres, and often draws from plenty of his own originals and edits to keep things fresh.

He’s already left his mark on us with two standout performances at the iconic Terminal V festival and whether he’s working with vocals to anchor a track or laying down bouncy low ends on labels like HEKATE Records, NowNow and Reckless, he always does it with his own fingerprint. From humble beginnings on a DDJ-400 in his bedroom just a couple of years ago to now headlining festival stages and packed clubs, he’s a man on the charge.

Can you remember the first time you heard electronic music and why it excited you? Did you decide there and then you wanted to pursue DJing and production?

I grew up a lot with electronic music, I listened to all kind of EDM sub genres which i think helped shape my brain into music production and DJing, I started DJing around 4 years ago but I wish I started sooner!

You have released a fair amount of tunes on a wide variety of labels. Do you produce with certain imprints in mind, or do you just do you and see where best suits them once they’re finished?

I always start with a vocal first, I feel like I can build a track round them easier if I start with them, and I can ‘hear’ in my head what to do next with the track.

How much does your DJing relate to your production – are you making tunes you want to play in your own sets, or are they different creative avenues for you?

I always try and make tunes to fit into my sets, i think it’s good to have some unreleased, edits and original tracks out so people come and see me for my sound.

You’ve played for us at Terminal V – what was it like? How different is it playing a gig at home in Scotland to elsewhere?

I’ve played Terminal V two times now and both times have been unreal, the stage set ups, sound system to the wild Scottish crowd makes it an amazing experience to play to especially being at home.

Tell us about your mix, the aim you had with it, and what you wanted it to say.

 I enjoyed putting this mix together because it shows the energy and effort i put in to my work, i try to play as many tracks as i can whilst being technical in the space of an hour, drop after drop keeping you hooked until the last song.

What gear did you use, is that important to you in any way whether in the booth or studio?

I used my own DDJ-400 decks at home in my bedroom, they’re the ones i used when i learned how to use the decks, they’re cheap but do the job.

What are you working on for the rest of the year?

 I’m working on growing myself as an artist. Building my brand on social media with lots of content as well as making new tracks for people to play and listen to.
